Epidermis
The epidermis is the relatively thin outer layer of the skin. It mostly consists of keratinocytes which originated from the basal layer. New keratinocytes slowly migrate up toward the surface of the epidermis to replace shedded cells.
The outermost portion of the epidermis, known as the stratum corneum, when remains intact, it helps to block the infringement of bacteria, viruses, and other foreign substances which cause potential damage to the skin.
Dermis
The dermis, the next inner skin layer, is composed of a thick layer of fibrous and elastic tissue that gives the skin its flexibility and strength. It binds the nerve endings, sweat glands and oil (sebaceous) glands, hair follicles, and blood vessels together. Collagen typically makes up about 70% of the dermis which plays a vital role in wound healing. Sustainable moisture keeps the skin soft and supple.
As skin ages or becomes damaged, collagen fibres lose their flexibility. This explains why older skin loses its elasticity and tightness which leads to the appearance of furrows and wrinkles. Under the dermis, hypodermis (i.e. subcutaneous tissue level), is composed of adipose tissue that gives the skin a smooth appearance and a well-defined body contour. The fat cells are then used by the body for energy and as a protective cushion.
