Golden Rules of Sun Protection

The rules of sun protection are simple and finite. Unless you have been living under a rock, you should know the importance of applying sunscreen for your optimal health and happiness. There is a lifesaving solid ground to convince you: Each year there is an approximately of 3.5 million cases of skin cancer been diagnosed and it is increasing! Overexposure to sunlight is widely accepted as the underlying cause for harmful effects on the skin, eye and immune system. Experts believe that four out of five cases of skin cancer could be prevented, as UV damage is mostly avoidable. Thus, wearing sunscreen is the best way to prevent it.

1. Select A Sunscreen That Is Lovable To Your Skin

Finding your sunscreen soul mate is the key motivating factor to convince yourself for using it regularly. If you think your sunscreen is greasy, thick or smelly, then most probably you have the wrong kind," says Jeffrey Dover, MD, clinical associate professor of dermatology at Yale University. It literally reduces your desire to wear it due to the uncomfortable sticky sensory in addition to pore-clogging concern which may eventually lead to constant breakouts. Happily, we take pride to introduce Lagom Timeless Sun Care which is a lightweight, non-greasy multitasking sunscreen that melts into your face like a second skin.

2. Watch Out For The Sun Protection Index

As a general rule, SPF 30 blocks 97 percent of UVB rays. This explains why dermatologist typically recommend SPF 30 sunscreen as a safe and effective way to protect against sun damage and photo aging. You may not be aware that a SPF 30 sunscreen provides 30 times more protection on a bare skin. That means it extends the sun burn duration by 30 times longer which is in this case, 300 minutes. That totals up to five hours of protection. However, you are supposed to reapply the SPF 30 every 2 hours when outdoors, especially if you are swimming or sweating a lot. You should wear sunscreen every day, in all weather and in every season.

3. Check Out For The ‘Broad Spectrum’ Label

Another important factor is the prevention of premature photoaging caused by UVA & UVB radiation. UVA light, also known as long-wave radiation carries the wavelength of 320 nm to 400 nm, accounting for approximately 95% of the UV light that reaches our skin. It is present all day long, all year-round, even when it is cloudy. Further, UVA rays penetrate through glasses there-in making sunscreen an absolute necessity.
UVA rays are considered the sun’s silent killers as it penetrates deeper into the dermis, destroying the collagen and elastin that support its firmness and elasticity leading to the formation of wrinkles and melanoma. More importantly, it is one of major cause that leads to different types of skin cancers.
On the other hand, UVB with a shorter radiation wavelength of 290nm to 320nm rays adversely damage the superficial skin layer by causing sunburn and discoloration and hyperpigmentation.

4. Apply A Sufficient Layer Of Sunscreen

There is a science to it. The FDA requires the effectiveness of a sunscreen to be tested at 2mg/cm², which means two milligrams of sunscreen per square centimetre of skin. It is almost impossible to measure how much skin you have on your face, which is why we suggest 1/2 teaspoon for your entire face and neck, and apply in two coating as a safeguard of protection: apply a thin layer and wait for its setting then follow by the balance. Remember to protect your nose which is the no 1 sunburn spot!

5. Multitasking Sun Care With Antioxidants

Since rays can still get through sunscreen, we encapsulate antioxidants such as vitamins C and E, Ceramide and Hyaluronic Acid in Lagom Timeless Sun Care to mitigate detrimental skin damage. Besides, this unique formulation helps to protect the skin against oxidative stress while imparting its long-lasting rejuvenation effect.

6. Make It A Sun-smart Plan In Your Daily Routine

In choosing a perfect sunscreen, you must also tailor its benefits to the specified needs of your daily routine. For instance, the every-two-hour rule of reapplication is crucial, particularly if you are going to be under direct sun exposure for long stretches of time. If you stay indoor for most of the day, then the first morning with liberal application is sufficient. If you are travelling on the road or leave work at 4PM, then you should definitely consider re-application of the sunscreen.

7. Makeup Is Never Enough

Even though your foundation has sunscreen in it, you still have to abide the 2mg/cm² rule, but it is close to impossible to wear that much of makeup foundation. Your best bet is to find a sunscreen that works as a finishing base under makeup that primes your complexion like Lagom Timeless Sun Care Apply a sufficient coat, let it set, and then go forth with your makeup while trying not to disrupt the sunscreen.
